Clay and Compromise

Student work from PVO Spring '24; Grades 5&6

Lesson by Myself

Over the course of the two day lesson, students made 'compromise' sculptures. They had to start with multiple forms and figure out a way to make them compromise into one whole sculpture.

On the first day, students learned how to make 3D forms out of clay. They were shown examples of both abstract and representational sculptures that could have been made with 3D forms. Students were then asked what geometrical shapes could have been used to form the different parts of the sculptures to show their understanding and orient them to the task at hand.

Students were then allowed to experiment and play with the clay until they were satisfied with the structure of their sculptures.

On the final day of the project, students painted their sculptures and presented them to their peers. Some students made objects and animals while other students stayed abstract with their sculptures.
