Create-Your-Own-Creature Masks

Student work from Everyday Arts Lab Fall '23; Grades 1&2

Lesson by Myself

Over the course of three days, students went from creating a creature to making a mask of it to finally performing as it in front of a background of their own creation.

On the first day, students filled out a Create-Your-Own-Creature worksheet. They used those worksheets to inform their design decisions while making their masks. On day one, they used tempera paint sticks to color their masks. On day two, students had access to googly eyes, pipe cleaners, roving wool, and air dry clay to build up the 3D sections of their masks.

On the final day of the project, students used tempera paint sticks to paint a habitat background for their performance. When they were satisfied, their backgrounds got hung up and they performed as their creature in front of them.
