Mosaic Takeover
Student work from Nash Summer Art School '23; Grades 3-5
Lesson by Victoria Grullon
Students engaged with themes of community and identity, as well as play and exploration during the two week long summer art school. Students worked individually and collaboratively on a variety of different projects building up to the final project: mosaic tiles.

Students filled a diverse set of roles over the course of the program, from artist to creative director, writer, and critic.

The students made tangram puzzle collages as a way of becoming familiar with simplifying objects into large shapes. The tangrams also served as an introduction to mosaic-making. They then made abstract mosaic coasters that were grouted by instructors. As students felt comfortable with the front-end of mosaic making, they moved onto the final mosaic tile project. For this project, students sketched, planned, glued, and grouted their final mosaic tiles, taking ownership of their tiles from beginning to end.
